Imagines Imperatoris ac Monumenta Principis:
A Source Book for the Building Activity,
Iconography, and Monuments Relating to Cn. Pompeius Magnus,
79 B.C. - A.D. 1509
The version now available online represents a draft that was finalized in 1998 for an academic assignment. Since that time, numerous additions (and some small corrections) have been made. The present version is tantamount to a rough draft or in the language of software, an early beta release.
The final version will be greatly enhanced in terms of internal links and presentation. Additionally most sources will contain newer translations, while many Greek sources will feature the full Greek text.
For your convenience we have presented below a summary of what this document contains.
INTRODUCTION:
Explains the protocol, purpose and specialized terminology for this section
of the Theatrum Pompei Project. Two terms will appear frequently: TESTIMONIA (T) and TESTIMONIA INCERTA (TI).
Simply put, TESTIMONIA contain the full text of all explicit references to Pompeius' monuments, while TESTIMONIA INCERTA contain all non-explicit references. This division was adopted to promote a full and fair evaluation of all sources. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Gives full bibliographical entries for all works consulted for this project. This section also provides full credits for translations, which also appear after each entry in the various Testimonia. INDEX: Provides an index of all the monuments of Pompeius. All references are linked to the respective testimony. INDEX LOCORUM: Lists each and every primary source that appears. All references are linked to the respective testimony. TESTIMONIA: A contextually complete translation is given for every direct reference to the monuments of Pompeius. In cases of Latin sources, the original text is provided. Select Greek sources appear in the original text.
TESTIMONIA INCERTA: A contextually complete translation is given for every oblique or indirect reference to the monuments of Pompeius. ADDITA: Additional ancient sources of relevancy are given in this place. LATIN DESIGNATIONS: Presented under five headings you will find a complete chronological tabulation of all Latin terms which refer specifically [i.e. by name] to the public monuments of Cn. Pompeius Magnus.
